"Even the shortest journey can't be finished without taking the first step. Even the most trivial task can't be completed without taking actions."

This is gospel truth.

Living in the world, what we fear the most is to become someone who's full of big talk but lacking action, someone who has grandiose aims but puny abilities.

No matter whether in studying or working, we should always recognize reality, go deep into practice, and practice to get genuine knowledge.

"The most important knowledge I learned during my long working years is that socialism is achieved by hard work."

This is a speech delivered on May 2, 2018, by President Xi Jinping at the teacher-student forum of Peking University. In this speech, President Xi cited this quote, "Even the shortest journey can’t be finished without taking the first step. Even the most trivial task can't be completed without taking actions." These words come from Xunzi - Cultivating Oneself, meaning that although the destination is very close, it is necessary to move forward step by step in order to reach the finish line; although the task is rather minor, people must get involved hands-on in order to actually finish it. If you idle around all day and do nothing, it is impossible to achieve the goal.

This passage of Xunzi emphasizes the significance of practice. No matter whether the ideal is big or small, whether the journey is long or short, we always have to put our head down and start putting in effort, one step at a time, until we succeed.

Our ideal indicates a direction, and practical work is the only right way to realize that ideal.
